Reading this Politico item on Obama’s botched handling of immigration policy, one would think Democrats are all for embracing scores of illegal immigrant children now in the U.S. for an indeterminate period of time.
Obama’s foes on border crisis: Democrats
“They sure didn’t check with me,” said Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. “I don’t know who they checked with, but I just think it was kind of a quick reaction without really thinking about the humanitarian aspects of this.”
In fact, many prominent Democrats are not only taking the Obama administration to task, they are also making it very clear they have no intention of letting the federal government put the children in their home states.
“Our citizens already feel burdened by all kinds of challenges. They don’t want to see another burden come into their state,” said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat. “However we deal with the humanitarian aspects of this, we’ve got to do it in the most cost-effective way possible.”
Democrat Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is another key example, though he’s tried to have it both ways. Additionally, Democratic hopefuls for Rhode Island governor also made news for their reluctance to fully embrace the White House’s plans.
Maryland governor and 2016 contender Martin O’Malley is being labelled a hypocrite after saying undocumented children should be allowed to stay in the United States, just not in his state. Or, put another way, after O’Malley criticized the White House’s expedited deportation policy, a “Democratic source” leaked a damning quote.
