Trying to follow the Obama Administration’s twisted web of lies and evasions in the Bergdahl affair is enough to drive anyone nuts. I’m not sure how long of a drive that was in the case of Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), who found herself on MSNBC arguing that the Taliban aren’t “necessarily” terrorists, but should be viewed as “part of the fabric of Afghanistan.”
This is where you get when you try to puzzle out the relationship Obama wants to have with the Taliban. On the one hand, they’re supposed to be a legitimate government that has a seat at the table in Afghanistan (never mind that we all know they’re going to kill everyone else at the table as soon as possible) and Bowe Bergdahl was a POW captured off the battlefield. On the other hand, they were demanding a cash ransom for him, and supposedly threatened to kill him if the White House notified Congress of the deal, which would make them (and the Haqqani gangsters that were holding him) terrorists, and he was their hostage.
Let’s not even get into the long string of unspeakable atrocities perpetrated by the Taliban, which have no place in the actions of a legitimate government or lawful fighting force… but might indeed be “part of the fabric of Afghanistan,” to the sorrow of every decent person trying to live there.
