Sir Hew Strachan, a senior advisor to the Chief of the Defense Staff in Britain, has blasted President Barack Obama’s military and foreign policy skills, saying that the president is “chronically incapable” of military strategy and that unlike George W. Bush, “Obama has no sense of what he wants to do in the world.”
Strachan, speaking to the Daily Beast, called Obama’s actions on Syria “crazy,” saying that he “has actually devalued the deterrent effect of American military capability” and that his meandering, half-hearted reactions to the Assad regime “left those who might be his natural allies in Syria with nowhere to go. He’s increased the likelihood that if there is a change of regime in Syria that it will be an Islamic fundamentalist one.”
Strachan, who is promoting his forthcoming book, The Direction of War, was also critical of British Prime Minister David Cameron, for the “failure to think through the strategic implications of his own actions.”
