HOUSTON – Houston police say one woman was killed and two others injured when they were attacked by a pack of pit bulls Sunday morning around 2 a.m. According to police, three pit bulls attacked the victims as they walked near an intersection.
Neighbors reportedly heard screaming and came outside to find a woman laying in the street covered in blood.
Officer R. Lujan with the Houston Police Department said, “When officers arrived they found a female laying on the ground with dog bites all over. At the same time there was another complainant that also had multiple dog bites on them.”
Neighbors believe the woman killed was homeless and walking with food in her hands when she was attacked. Police did not release her name but said she was in her mid forties. It’s also believed the attack occurred just minutes after another woman was mauled close by. That woman was transported to a local hospital for her injuries.
The third victim was a man who tried to intervene during the attack that killed the woman. He was also bitten and treated at the scene.
Neighbors seem to feel that it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously hurt. One of those neighbors, TD, said, “You have a whole lot of feral pit bulls and dogs run around these bayous, and now look what happened in front of my home,”
Another man, Reginald Shaw, was attacked by the same dogs last week while walking on the same street. Shaw said he was lucky to be alive: “When they went for my throat I put my hand up to prevent it, and that is when they bite my up here and one grabbed me by my leg,” he said. “They got me on the ground and one bit my arm, legs. They really had me until I got help, somebody came along and helped me.”
One of the dogs was reportedly captured. Authorities are still looking out for the other two. Police said the owner of the dogs has not been identified at this time.
