Dubbed as the Dark Prophet, Time Magazine announced Edward Snowden as a runner up to their annual “Man of the Year” award.
Snowden recently met with other well-known whistle-blowers in Russia, all of them ditching their technology to avoid potential electronic tracking to meet with the newest member of their club. Snowden fled to China and later Russia, where he was granted asylum to avoid prosecution when he stole and leaked information revealing extensive and invasive surveillance by the US National Security Agency.
The leaks have brought the NSA under extreme scrutiny, both by the citizenry and by politicians alarmed by the extent of the government’s domestic data collection.
Snowden lost the first place award to Pope Francis.
