Early on the morning of November 17, two young women were killed when their car was struck by a vehicle going the wrong way on the Seagrass Expressway in Coral Springs. According to Florida Highway Patrol, 21-year-old Marisa Catronio was killed instantly and Kaitlyn Nicole Ferrante, 21, died several days later from injuries.
According to the Miami Times, the wrong-way driver is believed to have tweeted “2 drunk 2 care” just hours before the deadly accident.” 20-year-old Kayla Mendoza was driving east in the westbound lane when her Hyndai Sonata smashed into the Toyota Camry. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. A spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol told CBS News’ Crimsider that Mendoza was not tested for alcohol on scene due to the seriousness of her condition, but results from a blood test taken at the hospital are pending.
The Miami Times first reported the existence of a Twitter account registered to a “Kaila Mendoza,” with just the slightest variation in the spelling of her first name. On her twitter page, Mendoza describes herself as a “pot princess,” and a little less than four hours before the time of the accident, a tweet appeared on her timeline saying “2 drunk 2 care.”
She has not been arrested or charged with a crime thus far. Florida Highway Patrol said that investigations into traffic homicides typically take 30-90 days to complete. They are aware of the Twitter post but would not confirm whether it belongs to Mendoza.
