Prison Guard Pay Shut-down, Prisoner Pay, Not So Much

Federal prison employees can’t collect a paycheck during the government shutdown, but that doesn’t mean the prisoners they guard have been forced to wait.

A group of 100 guards at a federal prison camp in Yankton, S.D., still have to work in order to “protect human life and property,” but will have to trust the government to make good on their promise to retroactively pay them.

A two-tiered system allows for monies to be paid to inmates for “services rendered.” The “inmates” may not be in charge of the proverbial asylum; however, some asylum’s inmates may have had a hand in designing the type of pay system that would lead to this.

In a cruel twist, the criminals locked up in the facility are still receiving their money for services rendered while they are in custody because there is a different funding tier for the prisoners’ pay.
