Gallup released a new poll today showing that 60% of Americans say the Democrats and the Republicans do a “such a poor job of representing the American people that a third major party is needed.”  This level of discontent is the highest level Gallup has measured in the 10 year history of asking the survey question.

There isn’t much difference among partisans. Democrats and Republicans register at similar levels on this issue. Fifty-two percent of GOPers and 49% of Democrats say a third party is needed. The number is higher for independents, not surprisingly, with 71% holding that view.

It’s possible that the government shutdown and debt ceiling fight has increased people’s irritation with the political process. Certainly those candidates running on an “outside” platform  hold some advantage with the public dissatisfied with Washington’s business as usual.
