New York, N.Y. (WPIX) – Start spreading the news: the saga of the downfall of ex-congressman Anthony Weiner is making its off-off Broadway debut. Two Hunter College alums, used transcripts from press conferences, interviews and the infamous sexually-explicit messages sent by Weiner to create “The Weiner Monologues.”
Director and co-creator Jonathan Harper said, “I think what we tried to do was to present what happened in the course of events as faithfully and weirdly [as] we could, just to make this larger point of what’s public and private.”
Co-creator John Oros says that the Weiner scandal is simply a smaller piece to a larger story, “It kind of plays with the question of how we have Facebook and Twitter, and now with the NSA scandal — [among the things] online, what’s actually private?” Oros said. “Probably nothing.”
Generally theaters encourage attendees to turn their phones off, but the creators of The Weiner Monologues are doing just the opposite…and there’s a good reason for it.
“Instead of telling the audience to turn off their phone, we’re going to tell [them] to keep the phone on,” Schlieman revealed. “We’ll be transmitting the pics that Weiner sent out… completely uncensored.”
The Weiner Monologues makes its debut next month at the Access Theater in lower Manhattan.
