Congressman Chris Collins (NY) has introduced the Government Shutdown Fairness Act (H.R. 3106), which has bee co-sponsored by Florida Congressman Steve Southerland (R), as well as thirty-one members of the U.S. House of Representatives
The Government Shutdown Fairness Act (H.R. 3106 prevents members of the U.S. Congress from receiving their pay while the government is shutdown.
According to the bill, congressional salaries will be put in an escrow account, which will comply with the 27th Amendment to the Constitution, that clearly states that compensation the of Senators and Representatives will not vary.
Salaries will be distributed back to Representatives once the shutdown has concluded.
Along with Southerland, fellow Republican Congressman Vern Buchanan, is also named as a cosponsor of the bill. Both men now join two other members of the Florida congressional delegation, Ron DeSantis and Tom Rooney, who have already stated that they would also refusing their pay during the shutdown.
The bill is currently in committee, and is expected to come down to a vote.
