A retired Canadian Mountie admitted in court Thursday to the 2011 murder of his wife, apparently over a bet on a game of Nintendo Wii. Keith Wiens has been charged with the second degree murder of his common law wife, Lynn Kalmring, although he claims he acted out of fear for his life.

It was not unusual for the couple to make bets of a sexual nature on the outcome of Nintendo games, but on the night of August 11, 2011, something went wrong. That night, after dinner and drinks, Kalmring supposedly won the game and a wager. Later that evening, when Wiens got ready for bed, he found sex toys displayed on his pillow but brushed them away, hoping to get sleep before a golf game the next day.

But according to Wiens, Kalmring became irate, suggesting that he was no longer attracted to her. He assured her that was not the reason: “I said ‘no, it’s nothing to do with that. I love you. I just need to get some sleep,'” Wiens said.  He then told her to go sleep in the guest bedroom but claims she came back into the room later and began hitting him. After fending off the initial attack, Wiens claimed, “She was not Lynn. She was crazy and she’d just assaulted me when I was sound asleep, and I was worried about what was coming next.”

According to Wiens, she then returned to the bedroom wielding a knife and he shot her once in the head. He then re-holstered his gun, threw up in the bathroom, called 911 and waited for police.

Wiens also claimed that it was the first fight they ever had but a prosecutor poked holes in that account, citing an incident when Wiens had to stop Kalmring from breaking into Willie Nelson’s dressing room with the intent of flashing her breasts.

The trial continues today.

There are many unanswered questions…none more concerning than why she wanted to show Willie Nelson her breasts.
