KENNER, LA (WGNO) – Early Wednesday morning police arrested two middle aged women and charged them with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile for allowing a 10-year-old child to drive them home.

Police were tipped of by a caller who noticed a car driving too slowly and swerving on I-10 at 1 a.m.  Officers found the car after it struck a curb and were shocked to find a 10 year-old child behind the wheel. Not driving were 54-year-old Brenda Byrd (allegedly drunk), 48-year-old Sheila Joiner (allegedly drunk), and a 15-year-old child. No information was given as to whether the teenager had been drinking.

According to police, both Byrd and Joiner “admitted to instructing the 10-year-old to drive the vehicle due to their level of intoxication.” They were taken into custody and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a vehicle.

Both children were placed in protective custody, then released to family members.
