Last night, MSNBC host Chris Hayes noted the 50-year anniversary of George Wallace’s “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door” by identifying the racist Alabama governor as a Republican. Wallace had physically blocked two black students from entering the University of Alabama in an attempt to keep his inaugural promise of “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”.
Of course, as most of us know, George Wallace was a Democrat, as were most racist politicians of that time.
One wonders if this was just an innocent mistake by some left-wing producer who has had it pounded into his head night after night at MSNBC that all Republicans are racists, so he automatically assumed that every racist throughout all of history was a Republican.
Or — it was the sort of purposeful deception we’ve come to know and expect from MSNBC….
UPDATE:
Poor Chris Hayes has been taking a beating on Twitter.
And he’s apologized for the “stupid, inexcusable, historically illiterate mistake.”
