IOWA CITY, Iowa — Police arrested an Iowa City man wielding a guitar, a sword, two throwing knives, and a flask filled with white powder last night at a gas station in Tiffin.
Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the Kum & Go gas station after being notified of a man loitering outside scaring the customers.
21-year-old Deandre L. R. Irby was spotted outside the store carrying a guitar, and with a “handle of some sort” sticking out of the back his shirt. When asked what it was, Irby told the deputies it was a sword.
Police seized the “samurai type” sword along with the two throwing knives, and the flask with a white powder inside which later tested positive for cocaine.
Irby faces two counts of carrying weapons and one count of possession of a controlled substance.
Apparently this is not the first time Irby has encountered trouble for his sword wielding propensity. In September of 2011, Iowa City police used a stun gun to subdue Irby when he was observed inline skating through a mall with a 26-inch “fantasy sword.”
