CBS News is reporting that government officials are “in the process” of filing charges against Edward Snowden. Snowden admitted to leaking secret documents, revealing the large-scale data-mining and surveillance program of the U.S. government.
The FBI will oversee the investigation. “”There’s no hesitation’ about charging Mr. Snowden, one of the American officials said, explaining that law enforcement officials had not been deterred by the debate inside and outside the administration about its leak investigations.”
Snowden, a government contractor with Booz Allen Hamilton, gave documents outlining US government surveillance to Glenn Greewald at the The Guardian. He also contacted and communicated with the Washington Post.
Initially, Snowden had fled to Hong Kong but he has since moved and his location is unknown. Once charges are filed, the government can try and extradite Snowden if they can locate him.
