The Democrats word of the week may be overreach but the IRS scandal is not going to end until we know who is responsible for it. As today’s hearings reinforced, we still do not have an answer to that basic question.
Inspector General J. Russell George was asked during today’s congressional hearings if he could identify the person or persons who started the added scrutiny of conservative groups. IG George could not answer that question because no one he asked during the course of his investigation would tell him.
The Obama administration’s response to scandal is pretty predictable. The scandal two-step goes like this–there is no scandal, we can’t talk
about the scandal, we’re sorry for the scandal, we won’t answer any more
questions about the scandal and, finally, isn’t it time to stop asking
about this old scandal. If you’ve been paying any attention in the last 5
years this should all sound familiar.
True to form, the Obama administration denied there was a problem at the IRS. Then once the IG got involved they (and he) refused to comment while the investigation was ongoing. Once the report came out they apologized and threw a few people under the bus (even as Lois Lerner plead the 5th rather than answer questions). So far this is par for the course. But the pattern is stalled at that point so long as the person or persons responsible remain unidentified. This scandal is not over until we know who is responsible. And as of this moment, we still do not know the answer to that question.
