Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn has proposed a law that would require gun owners to carry a $1M liability policy.

Bill S2353 will require all gun owners in NY to obtain and “continuously
maintain” insurance coverage of at least $1 million, or they will
suffer “immediate revocation of such owner’s registration, license and
any other privilege to own” a firearm.

If you already own a gun you have 30 days to get insurance before you are in violation of the law.  The cost: $1600-2000 a year.

What is the purpose of this? Will the criminals who use fire arms in the course of committing a crime, obtain insurance? (answer: no) Will insurance companies be paying out claims to criminals when law abiding citizens use their weapon in the course of self-defense? (answer: insane) So to what end and what function does this kind of law serve? Who would benefit from a gun owner having insurance, other than insurance companies?

This is a nother ridiculous hoop that gun owners are supposed to jump through, with no discernable affect on public safety.
