Jay-Z’s Tidal Donates $1.5 Million from Charity Concert to Black Lives Matter

Jay-Z’s streaming music service Tidal will donate $1.5 million raised at a charity concert last year to Black Lives Matter and other social justice organizations.

According to Mic, the money raised at last year’s Tidal X charity concert — which featured performances from the streaming service’s co-owners including Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé — will go to to the New World Foundation, which funds a number of local and national social justice advocacy groups.

Among the organizations that will receive donations are Hands Up United, the Opportunity Agenda, the Baltimore Justice Fund, New York’s Million Hoodies and NY Justice League, and Illinois’ Black Youth Project.

Donations will also reportedly be given to Trayvon Martin Foundation, the Michael O.D. Brown We Love Our Sons and Daughters Foundation, and the Oscar Grant Foundation.

The artists who co-own Tidal along with Jay-Z reportedly played a role in determining which charities would receive the concert revenue.

“The process of acquiring recommendations [for nonprofits] was collaborative and inspired by the message that speaks to racial and social inequities and injustice in our society,” Roc Nation managing director of philanthropy Dania Diaz said in a statement to Mic. “Each year we will support a different initiative. Our ideology is to have a hifi level of consciousness in everything we do.”

The announcement of the $1.5 million donation was timed to what would have been Trayvon Martin’s 21st birthday on Friday.

Last year’s Tidal X 10 1020 concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Arena featured performances from more than 20 artists including Lil Wayne, Damian Marley, Prince, T.I., Meek Mill and Usher. Jay-Z has said he intends the event to become an annual tradition for the fledgling streaming service.
