President Donald Trump said he wanted to hear from Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser, despite her reluctance to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“I’d really want to see her, I really would want to hear what she has to say,” Trump said to reporters as he left the White House in response to questions about his Supreme Court nominee.
Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault over 30 years ago when they were both in high school. Despite the Senate’s willingness to hear her case, Ford’s attorneys are demanding a full investigation about the facts of the case before she is willing to testify.
“If she shows up that would be wonderful if she doesn’t show up, that would be unfortunate,” Trump said.
The president commented on the issue as he left the White House for a trip to North Carolina to meet with first responders to Hurricane Florence.
He left the timing of the confirmation vote for his Supreme Court Justice up to the Senate.
“I’ve given her a lot of time, the Senate has given her a lot of time, we continue to give her a lot of time, we’ve held up the whole hearing,” he said.
Kavanaugh has expressed willingness to testify to the Senate Judiciary hearings about the accusation, which he has denied.
Trump said that the last-minute accusation revealed by Democrats was “very unfair” to Kavanaugh and his family.
“I can only say this: He is such an outstanding man. Very hard for me to imagine that anything happened,” he concluded.
