Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) chastised leftist protesters on Tuesday after they interrupted his opening statement during Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing.
Sen. Leahy complained about the lack of documents for Kavanaugh’s record in preparation for Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing.
“You’re vetting is less than 10 percent complete,” Leahy said.
As Breitbart News reported, the record for the number of documents ever received is 184,000, for then-nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. Lawmakers received over 900,000 documents on Kavanaugh’s record as a judge as well as his time in the George W. Bush White House. Of those over 900,000 documents, over 480,000 have been received to date by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
One leftist protestor proceeded to interrupt the Vermont Democrat and complain that women are going to be sent for “back-alley abortions” should he become a Supreme Court justice. The protestor visibly upset Sen. Leahy.
“Mr. Chairman, I do intend at any point to continue what I have to say with such interruptions,” said Leahy. “I don’t care who’s side they’re on.”
Senate Democrats repeatedly interrupted Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley’s (R-IA) opening hearing, attempting to delay proceedings to give them more time to pore over documents relating to Kavanaugh.
“We cannot possibly move forward, Mr. Chairman,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) said.
Protesters during the hearing shouted that President Donald Trump is “an illegitimate president who cannot make an appointment to Supreme Court” and this “should be an impeachment hearing.”
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) said Senate Democrats would be “held in contempt” if the Supreme Court hearing were a courtroom.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said if this hearing were a courtroom, the litigants could move the hearing to a later date.
Cornyn, a former Texas Supreme Court justice and Texas attorney general, retorted, “I would suggest that if this were a court of law, that virtually every member on the dais on that side would be held in contempt of court because this whole process is supposed to be a civil one where people get to ask questions and we get to get answers.”
Sen. Cornyn said, “I haven’t been in as many confirmation hearings as my colleagues, but this is the first confirmation hearing for a Supreme Court justice that I’ve seen, basically, according to mob rule.”
Sources close to NBC News revealed that the Senate Democrats’ efforts to disrupt the confirmation were coordinated by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) over the weekend:
