President Donald Trump updated the American people about the upcoming talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, signaling on Twitter that peace was possible.
Trump revealed that he was told by Chinese President Xi Jinping that Jong-un was looking forward to his meeting with the American president.
Jong-un made an unexpected trip to China to meet with leaders there and discuss the upcoming summit.
“Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Chinese state media reported that Kim was ready to denuclearize the country.
“The issue of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved, if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace,” Kim said according to Xinhua.
But Trump acknowledged that the tough sanctions would remain in place prior to the meeting which is expected to take place later this Spring.
“In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!” he wrote.
Trump appeared confident that peace with North Korea and denuclearization of the peninsula was possible through unilateral talks with Jong-un.
“For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility,” he wrote on Twitter. “Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity. Look forward to our meeting!”
