President Donald Trump will address the annual March for Life on Friday via satellite, according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
“We’re excited to announce that the president will become the first sitting president to address the March for Life from the White House live via satellite,” Sanders said at the top of the White House press briefing on Wednesday.
Trump’s decision to address pro-life activists live via video is unprecedented. Former President George W. Bush usually phoned into the annual march during his presidency to encourage activists. Vice President Mike Pence made history in 2017 by being the first sitting vice president to address the march.
According to the White House, Trump will address the marchers live from the Rose Garden at the White House, a location usually reserved for more formal announcements.
“The president is committed to protecting the life of the unborn, and he’s excited to be part of this historic event,” Sanders said.
Jeanne Mancini, the President of the March for Life issued a statement thanking Trump for his decision.
“We are most grateful to announce that President Donald Trump will address the 45th annual March for Life from The White House via satellite on Friday January 19th,” she said. “Since his first day in office, President Trump has remained steadfast on his campaign promises to the pro-life cause and has actively worked to protect the unborn.”
