White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner will not have to stick to a deadline to turn over documents for the Senate Judiciary Committee in regards to its investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and ranking Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) wrote to Kushner’s lawyer this month, saying the documents he provided for their probe were incomplete and demanding he provide the additional documents by the end of the month.
Grassley and Feinstein reportedly mentioned, in particular, a “back door overture” — seemingly referring to an outreach by Putin-linked banker Alexander Toshin — as well as “September 2016 email communications” concerning WikiLeaks.
But Politico reported Tuesday that Kushner’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said the committee gave an extension.
“Mr. Kushner’s counsel and staff from both the Majority and Minority spoke last week to go over the Committee’s requests and a schedule for producing additional information,” Lowell told the outlet. “There is no current deadline as both the Committee and Mr. Kushner’s counsel are working in good faith to produce whatever else may be responsive and relevant to the Committee’s inquiry.”
A spokesman for Grassley told Politico that Kushner’s attorney is “cooperating with the committee and we are in ongoing discussions to address the committee’s requests.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee is not the first committee to have difficulty getting the necessary information from the man once dubbed “Mr. Perfect.”
Lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee were angered in September when they discovered from media reports that Kushner used a private email account occasionally for White House business.
Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) and Vice Chair Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote to Kushner saying they were “concerned to learn of this additional email account from the news media, rather than from you, in your closed staff interview.”
