Doug Jones on Obamacare: ‘Repeal and Replace Is a Political Slogan’

Alabama Democrat Senate candidate Doug Jones said that repealing and replacing Obamacare is just a slogan and does not serve as a viable option to solving America’s healthcare problems.

Jones said, “Repeal and replace is a political slogan. It’s not something that’s workable.”

Rather than try to repeal Obamacare, Jones argued that the Affordable Care Act was meant to serve as a work in progress.

“The Affordable Care Act was never supposed to be the end of the discussion about health care in this country,” Jones argued. “It is always going to be a work in progress.”

Meanwhile, Moore campaign chairman Bill Armistead said in a press release that Moore “wants to make sure that the federal government is getting out of the healthcare business entirely.”

A recent Jones campaign ad argued that Obamacare renders health care “broken,” although Jones added that Moore’s pledge to repeal Obamacare is not the proper solution to America’s healthcare problems.

Jones admitted, “If it’s broken, fix it. Health care, it’s broken. You know it and I know it. But Roy Moore’s grandstanding and extreme views will do nothing to fix it and his policies will take us back to the past.”

Jones then argued recently that political stakeholders need to come together to find a bipartisan solution to health care.

Jones explained, “The first approach is you have to start talking things out,” adding:

Health care has been a political football the last few years, especially in the last year. I think in order for things to go forward, you have to bring stakeholders to the table and you have to listen to them and understand and have dialogues across political aisles. Health care is too important. It’s very complicated and that’s why you need to have the stakeholders, the people on the ground.

Jones continued:

Right now, everything is happening behind closed doors in Washington D.C., which is the last place that it needs to be decided. We need to be out in the open and have dialogues about the health care system so we can fix what needs to be fixed, keep what’s working for everybody and try to give everybody affordable health care and access to health care.

The Roy Moore campaign has continued to label Doug Jones a “proud supporter of Obamacare.”

The Moore campaign wrote:

Doug Jones is a proud supporter of Obamacare and a fierce opponent of repealing this disastrous socialized health care system. Obamacare is estimated to have put hundreds of thousands of people out of work, increased the cost of health care, and increased taxes on hard working Americans. Our economy has been struggling under the burden of Obamacare since its inception, and it has created more bureaucracy and massively increased the national debt.

The Moore campaign concluded, “Doug Jones has made it clear that he will continue to fight President Trump in his effort to repeal Obamacare. Judge Moore has been clear about Obamacare. He doesn’t believe that the government belongs in the health care business and will vote to repeal Obamacare.”

A recent poll revealed that Roy Moore has a seven-point lead over Jones.
