Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) is blasting Donald Trump for supporting teachers who want guns for self-defense.
Trump has been clear throughout his campaign that he thinks gun-free zones — on campus or off — are killing zones. In fact, during the October 28 Republican debate Trump said gun-free zones simply provide “target practice for sickos.”
And following the October 1 shooting in the Umpqua Community College gun-free zone, The Hill quoted Trump saying, “I’ll tell you, if you had a couple of the teachers or someone with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off.”
On January 8, 2016, The Washington Post quoted Trump saying, “I will get rid of gun-free zones on schools.”
Senator Murphy blasted Trump’s stance against gun-free zones Wednesday night. He told the audience at the DNC that Trump is “doing the bidding of the gun lobby.” And he said Trump’s plan to allow teachers to carry guns is “sinister.”
In fact, Murphy claimed Trump will spend part of his first day in office “putting guns in elementary schools.”
The irony here is rich. Murphy began his speech referencing the heinous attack on Sandy Hook Elementary–an attack in which a lone gunman had over 9 minutes in a gun-free zone to shoot, reload, and shoot again at his leisure. Donald Trump says enough is enough, teachers should be able to defend themselves and their student and they can do so if they are armed. And Murphy says Trump’s plan is “sinister”?
