On March 28 the U.S. Secret Service reacted to a petition for personal firearms at the RNC Convention by making clear that no such firearms will be allowed, period.
Tens of thousands of people have signed a Change.Org petition demanding they be allowed to carry guns in the Quicken Loans Arena during the convention. But Breitbart News previously reported the veracity of the petition was difficult to ascertain because Change.Org is a known hotbed for gun control petitions, rather than petitions for gun rights. For example, there was a petition seeking more federal control in the wake of the October 1 Umpqua Community College attack and another seeking more federal gun control because of Chicago gun crime. And there have been numerous other gun control petitions at Change.Org in addition to these.
Armed American Radio’s Mark Walters raised concerns that the petition was a ploy to draw in well-meaning gun rights proponents, then divide and conquer them when the RNC, NRA, or a prominent Republican spoke out against the petition. But the Secret Service has saved everyone the hassle by making clear that no personal guns will be allowed in the convention.
According to UPI, the Secret Service released a statement in which they “[cited] a federal law that provides the agency with the authority to ban firearms.” They stressed their role of ensuring “a safe environment for…protectees and the public“ and made clear that “individuals determined to be carrying firearms will not be allowed past a predetermined outer perimeter checkpoint.”
