During the November 22 airing of This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump responded to a post-Paris push for more gun control by explaining that arresting enemies of the state removes the impetus for gun control.
Trump was talking specifically about the Democrats’ current push to expand background checks to include persons on the no-fly list.
When Stephanopoulos asked Trump if he would support expanding background checks in this fashion Trump said, “We have laws already on the books as far as the Second Amendment and guns [go]…and if you have people on a watch list or people are sick, this is already covered in the legislation that we already have.”
Stephanopoulos then began to talk over Trump–in an attempt to redirect his comments–and Trump said, “Listen, George, if we have an enemy of state I don’t want to give him anything, I want to have him in jail. That’s what I want.”
This approach cuts to the quick for leftists who have spent decades leaving dangerous people on our streets and in our communities, then using the presence of those people to justify placing more and more gun control on the backs of law-abiding citizens. Trump’s solution is simple: If they are bad people–if they are enemies of the state–then lock them up. Do not leave them free to do harm to law-abiding citizens in the first place. This approach removes the impetus for gun control.
