Members of the Satanic Temple of Detroit staged a counter-protest—called “guerilla theatre”—in support of Planned Parenthood Saturday as tens of thousands of Americans across the country participated in a National Day of Protest against the nation’s largest provider of abortions, demanding Congress defund it.
The Satanists, donning black robes, gathered outside the Detroit and Ferndale, Michigan, Planned Parenthood clinics. As part of their counter-protest “theatre,” they drenched women—with their wrists bound—in milk, reportedly as a symbol of waterboarding with breast milk, to “illustrate the theocratic agenda imposed upon female bodies.”
According to the Washington Examiner, the group held up a sign that read, “America is not a theocracy. End forced motherhood.”
In addition, the Satanists affixed a symbol of their temple to the American flag.
According to the group’s Facebook page:
The Satanic Temple strongly opposes the promotion of misinformation and believes that all people are entitled to make informed decisions about their health, family and future without coercion. We will not remain voiceless when the philosophical and religious opinions of those in power are utilized to legislate morality. The attempt to do so violates American foundational values of freedom and liberty.
In July, Breitbart News reported that the Satanic Temple held an unveiling of the satanic figure of Baphomet, considered to be the “largest public satanic ceremony in history.” Proceeds of tickets to the event, which were sold at $25 and $75, were donated to support the reproductive rights legal action fund.
The counter-protest was in response to protests held in over 320 cities nationwide and at least five other countries outside of Planned Parenthood facilities. The protests were launched in the wake of a series of undercover investigative videos that revealed the abortion giant’s involvement in the harvesting of body parts of aborted babies for potential sale to biomedical companies.
