On August 21, the New York Police Department responded to a murder-suicide inside a federal building in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood.

According to the New York Times, the gunman was 68-year-old Kevin Downing. He allegedly kept two revolvers concealed in his bag while waiting in line for a security check, and, upon reaching the point where the guard addressed him, he shot the guard in the head. He then shot himself.

The guard—Idrissa Camara—was rushed to the hospital where he died, and the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The federal building is located at 201 Varick Street. It contains offices for “a post office, an immigration court, an immigration detention center and an office used by Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat.”

Police and federal agents are searching for a motive for the murder-suicide.
