On December 15, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe (D) proposed new regulations for gun shows, new reasons concealed carry permits (CCWs) can be revoked, and said he wants to reinstate the “one handgun a month law” to keep people from stockpiling or trafficking firearms.
These proposals come less than a week after PEW Research announced Americans are more concerned with protecting gun rights than passing more gun control and follow pro-Second Amendment Senatorial candidate Ed Gillespie’s (R) near upset of gun control Senator Mark Warner (D) on November 4.
They also come as Virginia’s legislature is dominated by pro-gun delegates voters put in place in November 2013.
According to the Associated Press, McAuliffe wants to bar private gun sales at gun shows and clarify the information gun show vendors can use in advertising their products. He wants to allow CCWs to be revoked for persons “delinquent on child support payments” and argues that a one-handgun-a-month purchase limit will cut down on gun trafficking and stockpiling.
He also wants to “prohibit the possession of firearms for persons subject to protective orders” and “prohibit the possession of firearms for misdemeanor domestic violence offenders.”
In addition to facing uphill battle in the GOP-dominated General Assembly, McAuliffe’s proposals set the stage for deciding which way Virginia will go in the 2016 presidential elections. Gillespie showed that a pro-gun candidate who runs a disciplined campaign may be able to move the Old Dominion from purple back to red.
