Luis Gutierrez: Without Amnesty George W. Bush Last Republican President

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who suggested on Monday that “every institution” in America should ignore the nation’s immigration laws until Congress passes amnesty legislation, said President George W. Bush will go down as the last Republican president in history if Congress does not act on immigration.

“I give you George W. Bush–the man who will go down in history as the last Republican president in American history,” Gutierrez said Tuesday on the House Floor.

He added:

If you do nothing on immigration, I guess you can take comfort in knowing that from Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush, you had a pretty good run. Freeing the slaves, winning the Civil War, the interstate highway system–those all go in the highlight column.

Suggesting that he was offering Republicans helpful advice, Gutierrez said that if Republicans in the House do not act on amnesty legislation, the only thing children in the future will know about Republicans as “a national party will be what they read in the history blogs.”

“They will look at 2014 as the year it all slipped away,” Gutierrez, who has said that this year is the last chance for sweeping amnesty legislation, asserted. “You still have time to change history,” he presented.

Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue half-joked last week that the GOP should not bother to run a candidate in 2016 if they do not pass amnesty legislation, and Gutierrez referenced those remarks in urging 200 Democrats to join with “60, 70, 80 Republicans” to pass “a bill or a series of bills.”

“I suggest they do it for Abraham. They do it for George,” he continued. “Do it for any little boy or any little girl in America who wants to grow up to be a Republican president.”

As Breitbart News has reported, though, an Eagle Forum report “documented how mass immigration may doom a conservative Republican Party, and a plurality of voters have indicated in two national polls that they would be ‘less likely’ to vote for candidates who support amnesty.”
