53% of Obama Twitter Followers Are Fake Accounts

An analysis by the Daily Mail has found that 19.5 million of President Barack Obama’s 36.9 million Twitter followers (53%) belong to phony Twitter accounts. 

The study, which used StatusPeople.com to conduct its analysis, found that First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s Twitter accounts are also loaded with phony Twitter followers. Biden’s Twitter followers are made up of 46% fake accounts; the First Lady’s primary Twitter account is followed by 36% fake followers.

Internet marketers and spammers create fake Twitter accounts and follow high-profile Twitter accounts in the hopes of being followed back so they can push Internet traffic. 

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was found to have the highest percentage of fake Twitter followers (33%) of any member of Congress.
