State Senator Glenn Hegar (R-Katy) sent a letter to Governor Rick Perry announcing his resignation from the office of State Senator for Senate District 18. The move comes shortly after the Senator’s election to statewide office to become the 25th Comptroller of Public Accounts for the State of Texas.
Hegar’s resignation will be effective December 5th. The expected resignation creates an opening to fill this seat which will be accomplished by a special election. Governor Perry will set a date for the special election.
“I am extremely honored, humbled, and grateful to the citizens of Texas who have elected me as their next Comptroller,” Sen. Hegar said in a statement obtained by Breitbart Texas. “I extend my deep and profound gratitude to the constituents of Senate District 18 for allowing me to be their voice in the Texas Senate for the last 8 years. Serving the citizens of Senate District 18 has been a tremendous honor, and I will always be grateful for the privilege to serve as a member of the Texas Legislature since 2003.”
State Representative Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) has already announced her plans to run for the seat being vacated by Hegar. She is joined in the race by fellow Republicans Gary Gates and Charles Gregory. Gate and Kolkhorst both bring impressive financial war chests to the race according to an article by Theodore Schleifer in the Houston Chronicle. The election cycle for the race is expected to be a very quick turnaround so that the district will not go without representation in the new Senate any longer than necessary. It is anticipated the election will take place sometime in late December. If no candidate obtains a 50 percent plus one vote majority, a runoff will be required two to three weeks after the first election.
Many have considered Kolkhorst to be the odds on favorite, but with Gates willingness to self-fund his campaign with more than $1 million the race could become quite competitive. It will certainly take a lot of money to cover the district quickly although the candidates have been working the campaign for nearly a year in anticipation of Hegar’s election. The district stretches from Brenham, Giddings and Bastrop on the north end to Rockport, Aransas Pass, Port Aransas and a small part of Corpus Christi on the south. It includes 21 counties.
