Jon Kitna, the 41-year-old former NFL quarterback who teaches math at a Tacoma, Washington high school, will make $53,000 this week to be the third-string quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in their “win or go home” game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
And he will donate his salary for the week to Lincoln High School, where he teaches, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Cowboys signed Kitna for this week after quarterback Tony Romo suffered a back injury that may put him out of the season. Though Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Romo could play, early indications were that Romo’s injury was a herniated disc in his back that would require surgery, which means journeyman quarterback Kyle Orton will most likely start on Sunday with a trip to the postseason on the line.
Kitna, having played for the Cowboys as Romo’s backup for three years, is familiar with head coach Jason Garrett’s offensive schemes. In addition, he is a good quarterback to bring in to run the scout team offense and mimic Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.
Since leaving the NFL in 2011, Kitna has been teaching math and helping his high school’s football team by running their scout team as well.
When Kitna was teased about math scores in the state of Washington having dipped, he reportedly, with emphasis, said that was not the case in his classes.
