California Mayors Join Push for 'Gun Violence Restraining Orders'

On September 3, the Los Angeles Times reported Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) submitted a letter on behalf of 69 California mayors urging Governor Jerry Brown (D) to sign “Gun Violence Restraining Order” legislation.

The legislation–AB 1014–is sponsored by Assembly members Nancy Skinner (D-15) and Das Williams (D-37) and was introduced following the Santa Barbara attack in which Elliot Rodger killed three people with a gun.

On June 24, Breitbart News reported that AB 1014 would allow family members “to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from a person they think poses a credible risk of harm to himself or others.” The order allowing firearm confiscation would be good for one year.

SFGate reports that Liberal Gun Owners Association President Eric Wooten argues Gov. Brown ought not sign AB 1014 because it “is an unproved, unsound, unaffordable, and likely unconstitutional bill that could cost lives.” Wooten also points out that the legislation “establishes criminal procedures that could make private medical information public record” and “suspends civil liberties on hearsay evidence.”

On top of this, Breitbart News has pointed out that even if AB 1014 were law–and even if it were a sound law–Rodger would likely have still killed at least three people because he killed three of his six victims with a knife, not a gun.
