The Sacramento Bee reports that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, head of the Republican Governors Association, will headline a $10,000-per-person luncheon fundraising event for the group on Friday in San Francisco, accompanied by California GOP gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari.
Kashkari is trying to drum up financial support to compete with Governor Jerry Brown’s $20 million war chest for the 2014 election. The luncheon is to be held in the “Room of the Dons” at the Mark Hopkins hotel.
Before he headlines the luncheon, Christie will be part of two finance events held by the governors group; all events are off-limits to the press.
At 8 a.m. Friday, Christie is scheduled to accompany Kashkari to visit a small business in the city, Hoogasian Flowers, to speak about jobs and the economy while fielding questions from the press. Kashkari sent an email to supporters inviting them to the event.
Christie is 3000 miles away from home, which serves him well. In the last week, numerous media outlets have attacked him over various issues, including the Washington Post (pension reform), Asbury Park Press (tax breaks for businesses), the Guardian (New Jersey’s growing subsidies for businesses), the Star-Ledger (a gay conversion case as well as Christie’s civil rights record), and MSNBC (the fees Christie paid lawyers to handle Bridgegate).
