U.S. Two Star Major General Shot, Killed While Training Afghan Military Personnel

On August 5, a U.S. Two-Star Major General was shot and killed in an attack at Camp Qargha, in Afghanistan.

Afghan military officers were being trained when “a gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform turned his weapon against Americans,” killing the General and wounding approximately 15 other troops. 

ABC News reports that the General’s name is being withheld until notification of “next of kin.”

The New York Times reports a German Brigadier General was also shot in the attack, but his wounds are “not life-threatening.”

The U.S. Major General “[appears] to be the highest-ranking member of the American military to die in hostilities since the Vietnam War.” Major General John Albert B. Dillard, Jr. “was killed on May 12, 1970, when his helicopter was shot down.”

RT.com reports that the attack took place around noon. Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said, “a terrorist in any uniform” carried out the heinous act by “[opening] fire on both local and international troops…[including] three Afghan army officers.”

Azimi said the gunman was killed.
