A February 20 Variety magazine article looks at Piers Morgan Live‘s dismal viewership numbers and asks if Morgan’s gun control talk is killing the show.
According to Variety, Morgan’s recent shows drew “270,000 total viewers.” And February has seen “six of the show’s smallest 10 audiences” since the launch of Piers Morgan Live in January 2011.
While Variety indicates that “there’s no way to quantify how much of a factor the discussion of gun control on ‘Piers Morgan Live’ has contributed to its ratings [decline], … the show’s numbers have fallen more sharply since it became a frequent subject.”
Variety also points out how vitriolic Morgan’s gun control rants have been, as when he had Gun Owners of America’s executive director Larry Pratt on the show in December 2012 and actually asked him, “You’re an unbelievably stupid man, aren’t you?”
On February 17, Nancy Grace was on Morgan’s show, and she hammered him for harping on gun control:
Are you back on gun control again? If it weren’t for the British, we wouldn’t even have to have protections to carry guns. It was the British way back when they founded America. They were running through all our homes trying to take our stuff. So we’re protected under the Constitution.
So it’s not really right for a Brit to jump up and start talking to us about gun control.
Morgan’s declining audience members seem to agree.
