Midwest Hit With Cold Snap, Earliest Halloween Snow in a Decade

The Midwest is on the receiving end of a Halloween trick with the coldest Halloween weather in years. Chicago even got its earliest measurable snowfall in a decade.

This year, parents in the Midwest had to make sure their little trick-or-treaters were bundled up under their spooky costumes as the ghostly night began with a severe cold snap. As the day dawned, the Great Lakes region was hit by chilly winds and temperatures in the 30s and 40s. 

The last time Halloween was this cold in the Midwest was in 1993.

Chicago even found snow before noon on the 31st. The city experienced a measured one-tenth of an inch of snow on Halloween Day, snarling Chicago’s O’Hare airport and cancelling over 700 flights. Friday’s was the first measurable snow seen this early since 1993.

Chicago has seen snowfall on October 31 only six times since 1873.

Winds were so high on Friday that the city put out a lakefront flood advisory.
