The activist organization National Council of La Raza (NCLR) kicked off its “Month of Action” campaign to pressure lawmakers to pass comprehensive immigration reform and thank allies on the left for their support during Congress’s August recess.
Last week, a NCLR Action Fund regional organizer met with staff for Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL). According to La Raza, the group met with the Congressman’s Deputy Chief Director and “urged” Webster to “work with his House colleagues to give immigration reform a vote.” The group also praised Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) for his support on immigration reform.
In North Carolina, a local La Raza affiliate “joined forces with the Latino Coalition of Randolph County to march for immigration reform in Asheboro.”
According to La Raza, activists “demanded” that Rep. Renee Elmers (R-NC) “show her support of comprehensive immigration reform.”
Elmers reportedly told the group she “wholeheartedly” supports the DREAM Act, but immigration reform activists indicated they needed to keep the pressure on her to ensure she keeps her promise to them
La Raza plans to use the August recess to plan a “series of events” across the nation to push for comprehensive immigration reform. The House will reportedly take up immigration bills after Representatives return in September from recess.
