An alleged hammer-wielding robber was shot and killed Sunday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. as he reportedly tried to rob a gun store and the store owner opened fire.

KTVU reported the incident occurred at East Bay Firewarms in Livermore, California.

The 28-year-old alleged robber came into the store “wearing a mask, gloves, and a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head.”

The Livermore Police Department observed that the alleged robber “then attempted to rob the gun store by taking a firearm while armed with a hammer.”

NBC Bay Area noted the store owner then fired two rounds, at least one of which struck the suspect, who died at the scene.

Police viewed the store owner’s actions as self-defense.
