Butte County, California Sheriff Kory Honea says Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 63 would infringe on Second Amendment rights and “turn law-abiding citizens into criminals.”
Honea was joined by sheriffs from Shasta and Modoc counties, as well as the California State Sheriff’s Association, all of whom point to problems with Newsom’s proposition.
Proposition 63 would implement a statewide ban on “high capacity” magazines, and force Californians to take pass a background check for ammunition purchases.
According to Action News Now, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said the requirements of the proposition do “nothing to stop crime.” Rather, they would simply require law-abiding citizens to jump through more hoops to obtain the ammunition they need for self-defense while also limiting the number of rounds a citizens’ gun could possess when under duress.
Bosenko said, “Proposition 63 is bad for gun owners and bad for California,” and he pointed out that it “is opposed by the California State Sheriff’s Association representing all 58 county sheriffs.”
Modoc County Sheriff Mike Poindexter pointed to Proposition 63’s burden on rural communities. He said it “would be a waste of time and public resources.”
Will Clark, owner of Down Range Shooting Center, says that a serious approach to reducing gun crime would revolve around the implementation of harsher penalties for such crimes.
In other words: push laws that go after criminals, instead of law-abiding citizens.
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is on record supporting Newsom’s referendum. Newson has cast himself as the far-left’s leader on gun control, and recently blamed the National Rifle Association (NRA) for the murder of three police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There is no evidence linking the NRA to the shooting.
