A pregnant woman who shot an intruder in her home Friday morning says, “This was my first time pointing and shooting.”
The incident occurred around 2:20 a.m. in Birmingham, Alabama.
According to WVTM, the woman–Marquita Turner–is “five months pregnant” and her home has been “broken into three times” in the past 7 months. She was in bed Friday when she thought she heard someone trying to come through a window. She grabbed her pink Taurus Millennium 9mm and went to investigate.
As soon as she stepped in the hallway, Turner found herself face-to-face with the intruder. She said, “I grabbed my gun when I woke up. And I walked out of the door and I saw them, the guy in the hallway … he was kind of close to me so I shot and he fell. And from that point, I went and turned on the lights and I called the police.”
She added:
It was immediate. Once I saw him I instantly, it was just fire ’cause it was adrenaline rush, scared, need to protect myself and my child. It was just fire at that time. It wasn’t no see who it was. It was pitch black. All the lights was off. So I didn’t turn any of the lights on because I know I didn’t want if he came in there, he could see me, he could have harmed me before I harmed him.
Turner said, “This was my first time pointing and shooting. I never been to a gun range. I never went to target practice or anything. I was just, at the time, protecting myself.”
She advises other mothers to get protection too:
You have to protect yourself. Without a doubt. Take matters into your own hands. Get some type of protection. Don’t take anything for granted. You got to protect you and your child. Be strong. If it comes down to that, then that’s what you have to do. Don’t be scared.
The suspect was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover from his wounds.
