On Sunday, the California GOP voted to endorse a ballot initiative to “hasten death penalty appeals” while opposing initiatives legalizing recreational marijuana, expanding gun control, and mandating condoms in pornography.
GlobeNewsWire (GNW) reports that the marijuana initiative is titled the Adult Use Act, and is sponsored by Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom. It would “legalize recreational marijuana use for anyone over the age of 21, and would open the door to commercialization of the addictive drug.”
According to GNW:
As was the case when Prop 215 ushered in medical marijuana in 1996, the Gavin Newsom bill is backed by out-of-state billionaires like Sean Parker, who are committing tens of millions to persuade the California voters to vote for the initiative and make marijuana use legal in California.
In addition to opposing the weed initiative, the CA GOP voted to oppose Newsom’s gun control expansion as well. Newsom is seeking to bar law-abiding Californians from possessing any ammunition magazine larger than the 10-round magazines Elliot Rodger used to carry out his 2014 Santa Barbara attack. Moreover, he wants to force law-abiding citizens to undergo a background check for ammunition purchases for the firearms they passed background checks to acquire.
According to the Sacramento Bee, “GOP delegates recommended support for an effort requiring stores to direct grocery bag fees to environmental projects, yet they instructed voters to oppose measures requiring condoms in pornography, establishing price standards for prescription drugs, limiting hospital executive pay, increasing income taxes on the wealthy and repealing the death penalty.”
