Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is asking the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to launch an investigation that will block the release of the smartphone-shaped gun designed by Kirk Kjellberg.
Breitbart News previously reported that Kjellberg designed a gun that looks like a smartphone, but which has built-in barrels and a folding handle that allow it to function as a gun in self-defense situations. He designed the smartphone gun so concealed carriers would achieve “Ideal Conceal,” but Senator Schumer claims the firearm is “a disaster waiting to happen.”
According to Twin Cities.com, Schumer is calling on the DOJ and ATF to launch an investigation into the gun before it makes it to the market for sale. He claims, “A gun looking like an everyday item could violate federal law” and suggests the Minnesota designer needs to be investigated.
Kjellberg responded by saying, “The idea that this is going to cause some new big threat is just not true.” He pointed out that “there are already small, easily concealed guns with more firepower than two shots on the market, as well as a wide range of holsters for practically every part of the body.” So concealing a gun–even a much larger gun–is already a very simple task.
The “Ideal Conceal” .380 smartphone gun is expected to go on sale in October for around $395.
