A union worker who attended former Vice President Joe Biden’s first 2020 presidential campaign event on Monday at a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, union hall is reportedly worried that many of his co-workers will continue to support President Donald Trump.
“A lot of people I work with are Trump supporters,” Joe Vesco, a member of the steel workers union, told the Los Angeles Times. “They are tired of the same old, same old when it comes to Democrats. They need to get back to focusing on people and jobs, not bashing Trump.”
Biden kicked off his campaign after securing a key endorsement from the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Before the event, Trump hammered the “Dues Sucking firefighters leadership” for going against the will of its members and supporting Biden.
“The Dues Sucking firefighters leadership will always support Democrats, even though the membership wants me. Some things never change!” Trump tweeted. “I’ll never get the support of Dues Crazy union leadership, those people who rip-off their membership with ridiculously high dues, medical and other expenses while being paid a fortune. But the members love Trump. They look at our record economy, tax & reg cuts, military etc. WIN!”
NBC News reported after Trump won the White House in 2016 that “when the IAFF union polled its members after the election,” only “27 percent said they had voted for Hillary Clinton. Nearly twice that number, 50 percent, reported voting for Donald Trump, while an unusually large chunk refused to answer.”
Trump shocked the experts in 2016 largely because, as numerous reports documented, he “earned levels of support among union members that the GOP hasn’t seen since Ronald Reagan.”
