Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) stated that President Obama “has already intimated that he is looking for ways” to work around the law to close down Guantanamo Bay or transfer individuals to the US, adding, “the president consistently uses that lull” to do things that are unpopular on Saturday’s “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel.
Scott said of his spoof of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” criticizing the transfers of detainees from Gitmo, “I thought it would be very important for us to make sure that the cover of darkness was not used again by this administration to do things that we know the American people disagree with. … The fact of the matter is, that the president consistently uses that lull to do things that are inconsistent with what I think is in the best interest of the average person and the average place in this country.”
Scott added that the president does not have the authority to close down Guantanamo Bay unilaterally, “Unfortunately, in his last press conference, at the end of the year, the president said himself that he was still looking for ways to close Gitmo. It would be an uphill battle. I want to make sure that that hill is as high as possible.”
Scott concluded, “when you look at the current law, the president would have to violate the law. We are a country of laws. We must reinforce this notion of the rule of law. Every single American, including the president of the United States, have to obey the laws of this country. And if that is the case, we won’t have a problem. But he has already intimated that he is looking for ways to work around it.”
