Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee argued gun control advocates wouldn’t accept restrictions on the First Amendment “imposed on them by people like me” and that people are afraid if they report suspicious activity “they’re going to be labeled a xenophobe, a bigot, a hater, a racist on Saturday’s “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel.
Huckabee said, “I’m wondering, would they be willing to accept some restrictions to the First Amendment, imposed on them by people like me. I don’t think so. This is absurd. Because it was not so much which weapon was used. It was the intent of the killer. These are terrorists, and they were making pipe bombs. I they could have used the pipe bombs more effectively, that’s what they would have done. So, take away their assault weapons, look, a pencil is an assault weapon if you put it in the hand of somebody who wants to kill you.”
He further stated, “we hear these people say, and you see the signs in the New York subways. If you see something, say something. Now, people are afraid if they say something they’re going to be labeled a xenophobe, a bigot, a hater, a racist. Nobody wants to be labeled that. Nobody wants to be ostracized. So now, because of political correctness, the cops may tell us see something, say something, people understand, say something, get a label on you, and be plastered on the front page of the papers. It’s not going to happen.”
Huckabee concluded, “I would put a big focus on the people who are most likely to commit this kind of activity. And if people have been traveling to the Middle East, and there’s indications that there is radicalization, you know, then I’d put the focus on them. I wouldn’t go put the focus on Tucker Carlson and be afraid that he’s going to go crazy on us one day. I just don’t understand why the president thinks that if you disarm every law-abiding citizen, that somehow that makes us safer when someone breaks into our home, or breaks into our office building, and sprays us with bullets. … And this is the way the left always constructs the argument is that it was too easy to get a gun. Well, part of that is because, you know, you have people who came to this country with visas, they came with passports. If this woman was in fact, a radical when she came and radicalized her husband, then I’d like to ask, not so much why should we take Tucker’s gun or my gun away? But why didn’t we do a better job of vetting this person, and now you want to bring several hundred thousand refugees to this country, and we don’t know really who they are? That’s why Americans are just in a rage. We feel like our government is working against us, rather than trying to protect us.”
