Correction/Editor’s note: This article, which originally ran under the headline “NBC Science Contributor Who Reported About Having Coronavirus Admits He Never Had It,” has been updated to include new information. According to Dr. Joseph Fair, he received a clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 even though it was not confirmed at the time by laboratory tests. He said in November: “I was diagnosed with it by five different physicians from my CT scans and ‘Covid’lung. They saw infiltrates which are blood clots beginning to form in my lungs. I was never laboratory confirmed and that’s where I made a mistake. Physicians still consider me diagnosed. As a lab person, we always look for lab confirmation, but a clinical diagnosis is a diagnosis for a medical doctor. I told everyone on day one my lab tests were negative because I though it important to be transparent. That was later miscommunicated as me being deceptive. I was not involved in my care or diagnosis as a scientist. I went by their guidance and was treated in a Covid ward for Covid. … It’s not actually strange I tested negative. … I self treated at home for 8 days and came home four days before that started. The virus would have likely cleared from my system by the time I developed bilateral pneumonia. I also have my CT scans.”

NBC and MSNBC science contributor Dr. Joseph Fair documented his battle with coronavirus.

The Daily Caller reported Friday: “Dr. Joseph Fair, a virologist, believed he had the virus and appeared on air numerous times to discuss his struggle with illness in May and June. On Tuesday, Fair admitted that he tested negative for the virus multiple times but had originally believed he had it regardless. Fair also tested negative upon taking an antibody test.”

Fair’s timeline on Twitter documents his journey over the past two months, from announcing that he had “come down with COVID” on May 13, to revealing on July 7 that he had tested negative for antibodies.

After he revealed his initial diagnosis, good wishes for a speedy recovery poured in from friends and fans, celebrities and viewers.

Fair was hospitalized, but released several days later:

In his Twitter profile, Dr. Fair describes himself as a “Virologist, Epidemiologist, Outbreak Responder, Advisor to Governments/Industry.”
