A fight at a bar featuring narco-music led to a shootout where 12 people were injured in the central Mexican city of Cuernavaca, Morelos. The shooting apparently escalated from a fist fight.
Authorities in Morelos are using surveillance video and witness statements to track down a team of gunmen who pulled up to a bar and opened fire, injuring 12 individuals. The lead singer of the band performing and two roadies were shot during the attack. Cuernavaca is approximately 60 miles south of Mexico City.
Information released by the Morelos State Security Commission revealed that the shooting apparently started as a barroom fist fight inside a shopping center. The shootout took place at the bar called La Metiche, where the narco-music group “Fuerza Del Rey” was performing.
According to authorities, at around 4 am, a fight led the bar’s bouncers to remove two men from the establishment. An hour later, the pair returned with three others. Four of the men were carrying various firearms and shot at least 15 times into the bar before fleeing the area in two separate vehicles.
When emergency personnel responded to the scene, they treated seven men who were shot and five others cut or beaten. Two of the shooting victims are believed to be in serious condition. Authorities did not reveal if the suspected gunmen are linked to one of the drug cartels operating in the region.
A few hours after the shooting, one of the members of Fuerza Del Rey posted a video to share some of the band’s versions of events and claimed they had no share of responsibility for the events.
